Bryan and Cy - Going Deep Into Games
In an age where folks say starters don't go deep enough into games, Bryan Woo joins the Cy.
By Tom Wike | August 31, 2025
In college, Bryan Woo went 4-7 with a 6.36 ERA in just under 70 innings pitched. Not exactly good or even close to average. But scouts be scouting and he was a 6th round pick in 2021. Foolish Baseball has an outstanding video about Bryan Woo's rise from March 2025. It details Woo's excellent Vertical Approach Angle and *Adjusted Zone Percentage along with so much more. Really fun video. Fast forward to August of 2025, Woo is doing things not seen since a man named Denton True “Cy” Young was pitching back in 1905. And it involves going deep into games.

"Percentage of Starts in 2024 getting 5 IP, 6 IP, 7 IP etc" by Anecdote Baseball | Data: Stathead Chart: Anecdote Baseball
For 24 straight starts, Woo completed six or more innings with two or fewer walks. Nobody has done that since Cy Young. Not Maddux, not Walter Johnson, or any of the 500 or so other pitchers to garner Cy Young (voting) attention. With ERAs in professional ball at about half of what he did in college, Woo is all miracle.
Entering 2025, there have been 8,091 pitcher seasons where a pitcher made 24 or more starts. Cy Young 120 year ago, and a pitcher who was getting shelled in college.
Only 98 of those 8,091 pitcher seasons had better WHIPs than Woo’s 0.953 WHIP entering 8/31/25. Only 60 of those if you count since 1920.
In 2024, 40.51% of all starts went 6 or more innings. Many pitchers have had the chance to do what Woo did over his 24 straight starts in 2025. Certainly, in Ted Lyons or Steve Carlton's day they were going 6 or more innings. And yet, it’s Bryan and Denton, alone.
*Apologies to the estate of Cy Young. Anecdote Baseball's database only goes back to 1901 so that's missing 286 of Cy's 511 wins.*
